Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had their “sights set” on Hollywood after stepping down as senior working royals in 2020.
Today, March 31, marks four years since the couple handed back their HRH titles to the monarchy.
At the time, royal aides stated that Harry and Meghan would retain the use of Frogmore Cottage, visit the UK regularly and still visit various royal events – although not as official duties.
According to royal expert Kinsey Schofield, Meghan and Harry have gone from “golden couple to punchline” in the space of four years – especially in the quest to make it big in Hollywood and recent hopes of a rebrand.
Here, Express.co.uk looks at five times that Meghan and Harry have been “humbled by Hollywood”.
Following the release of his bombshell memoir, Spare, last year, Harry’s “todger talk” comments provided Americans with a lot to talk about.
According to Ms Schofield, Harry wrote of “applying Elizabeth Arden cream to his hangdown and it reminding him of his mother, Princess Diana”.
Talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel then dedicated “multiple segments” of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ to Harry’s “outrageous” comments. He joked about – whilst holding a fake children’s book – of the story of ‘Prince Harold and his frozen yoghurt slinger’.
On the show, Jimmy then told the amused audience, “I don’t know if you know about this, it’s a twist on the Princess and the Pea, it’s called ‘The Prince and the Penis’ before reading some of the fake book aloud.
Saturday Night Live – a comedy fixture in the US – wasn’t afraid to take swipes at Harry and Meghan – and this episode was no different.
The show – created by Lauren Michaels – is pieced together by various high-profile celebrities and a group of comedians.
During the opening monologue, comedy legends Martin Short and Steve Martin joked that “similar to Harry and Meghan, no-one is rooting for us but you’ll tune in anyway”.
In another episode, sketch comedian Colin Joss spoke of Meghan’s rumoured return for a Suits spin-off. He joked that the show – which Meghan appeared on as Rachel Zane for seven series – will have to focus on “Meghan’s character struggling to balance her legal career while caring for an unemployed immigrant as a photo of Prince Harry flashed across the screen”.
During his appearance at this year’s Golden Globes, comedian Joe Koy slammed the couple amid his speech on stage.
In a dig at Harry and Meghan, the comedian said that “it turns out that Harry and Meghan were still getting paid millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing – and that’s just by Netflix”.
The camera at the event then zoomed in on Netflix’s CEO – who himself also cracked a smile.
At the same event last year, comedian Trevor Noah also took a swipe at the Sussexes.
Mr Noah said that James Cordon is a 12-times Emmy winner and “the host of The Late Late Show is living proof that a man can move from London to Los Angeles and not tell anyone about his frostbitten penis.”
Comedian Chris Rock took a major swipe at the couple during his selective Netflix special – blasting the pair as “victims”.
According to Ms Schofield, he said that he insists “everyone is trying to be victims, including people who well know they’re not victims”.
His comments subtly referred to Meghan’s allegations during the pair’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.
He said, according to Ms Schofield, that “sometimes in just some ‘beep’ in-law ‘beep’.”
South Park famously took digs at the California-based couple last year.
The notorious comedy show had “no chill” when they set their sights on Harry and Meghan in an episode titled ‘The Worldwide Privacy Tour’.
The show placed the couple on a talkshow called ‘Good Morning Canada’ where Harry holds up a sign that reads ‘we want privacy’. Meghan is standing next to him holding a sign that reads, ‘stop looking at us’.
Ms Schofield said: “Meghan’s character is described as a sorority girl actress influencer and victim, meanwhile [Harry] is seen marching over to the house of his neighbour Kyle and rubbing his blue todger across the window while yelling, ‘have some respect for people’s privacy’.
Family Guy also then got on board and took a swipe at the couple. In October 2023, the show showed the pair tanning by the pool.
A butler approaches the couple, handing Harry his “millions from Netflix for no-one knows what”. To which Harry replies, “put them with the rest of them”. Meghan is also seen getting a text about an Instagram post
