The Duke of Sussex took on an inaugural role for BetterUp following his U.S. move

Prince Harry is back in San Francisco for BetterUp’s Uplift summit.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, stepped out on Wednesday to attend the coaching and mental health platform’s two-day conference in northern California, a few hours from his Montecito home.

Prince Harry has served as BetterUp’s first Chief Impact since 2021, taking on the job after stepping back from his royal role with his wife, Meghan Markle, and relocating to her home state.

Harry joined the summit’s lineup of speakers that also included Brené Brown, Mindy Kaling (who previously appeared on Meghan’s Archetypes podcast), Tracee Ellis Ross, authors James Clear and Adam Grant, leaders from organizations ranging from Google to the U.S. Air Force, BetterUp behavioral scientists and more.

“Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex and Chief Impact Officer (CIO) of BetterUp, hosted an insightful conversation with CHRO’s at BetterUp’s Uplift Summit in San Francisco,” a statement about the conference posted on Sussex.com said Thursday, April 11.

“He was joined by organizational psychologist and BetterUp’s Chairman of the Center for Purpose & Performance, Dr. Adam Grant and Cisco’s Chief People Officer, Kelly Jones,” it continued. “This year’s summit, which centered on courageous leadership, provides a unique forum for C-suite leaders, business executives, and HR professionals and advocates.”

“The session, Beyond Burnout: Transforming C-Level Stress Into Strength, examines how C-level leaders manage the unique pressure of their roles, build resilience, and foster a culture that supports sustainable performance,” added the statement. “The trio dove into the psychological toll of leading through uncertainty, sharing personal anecdotes, evidence-based practices, and forward-thinking policies aimed at helping leaders thrive amidst the pressures of today’s world and modern corporate life.”Michael M. Prince Harry appeared at the Uplift summit last year, where he spoke about what fuels his fire in conversation with BetterUp CEO Alexi Robichaux.

Responding to a question about what drives his purpose, the Duke of Sussex touched on being part of a team with a shared mission, such as during his time in British Army and with the Archewell Foundation he founded with Meghan.

“For me, personally, I get so much out of helping other people. To be in the service of others is what drives me, what gets me out of bed every day. Then you have kids,” said Harry, who shares 4-year-old son Prince Archie and 2-year-old daughter Princess Lilibet with the Duchess of Sussex, 42.

The conversation turned to “new dad” Robichaux, who later mentioned he was learning about awe from his baby son, then 9 months.

“Kids ground you,” Prince Harry said.

King Charles’ younger son was announced as the startup’s first Chief Impact Officer in March 2021. BetterUp celebrated Harry as a “natural addition to our executive team, as he’s long been an advocate for improving mental fitness.” The Duke of Sussex is a passionate advocate for mental health and previously revealed he has used BetterUp’s resources.

“I was matched with my coach who, quite frankly, is truly awesome and has always given me sound advice and a fresh perspective, which is so valuable,” he told the Wall Street Journal around the news of his BetterUp role.

Prince Harry’s appearance at Uplift, which wraps on Thursday, marks his first formal event since Kate Middleton announced that she is undergoing treatment for cancer. The Princess of Wales, 42, shared the news in a self-written video message that the palace published on March 22.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a statement shortly after their sister-in-law made the announcement about her health.

“We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace,” Prince Harry and Meghan said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
