Prince Harry’s telling three-word response after royal aide’s blunder
A royal aide once quickly text Prince Harry to apologise for referring to him as ‘mate’ and received an immediate response from the Duke of Sussex
Prince Harry’s aide once referred to him as “mate”, causing a quick panic over what to day, according to a new book.
The aide is said to have surprised the Duke of Sussex with his choice of words and immediately apologised for the error. A revealing new book has explained how the incident happened prior to Harry tying the knot with Meghan Markle in 2018. At the time, Harry lived at Kensington Palace alongside his brother Prince William and a number of staff members.
While staff could be less formal towards the brothers than their father, King Charles, “mate” certainly isn’t a phrase they would have expected to hear from a member of staff.

An excerpt in the book read: “When Nick Loughran worked at Kensington Palace as a press secretary, he would call Harry by his first name, but tended to be more formal with Prince William because their relationship was not so close. Ed Perkins, who also had a spell as press secretary for the two princes, once accidentally sent a text to Harry saying, ‘Hello mate’.
“He recalled: ‘I texted back saying, ‘So sorry, just called you mate. I didn’t mean to.’ [Harry] wrote back saying, ‘Please don’t worry.'”
When first released in 2022, the explosive new book lifted the lid on life behind palace walls as Harry and wife Meghan Markle stepped down as royals.
Now, Harry and Meghan have forged their own path and are currently in the midst of a a number of projects, including Harry’s polo documentary for Netflix and Meghan’s new lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard.
She has also signed a new deal for a new podcast with Lemonada, but it’s reported the project has been delayed for a year. A source claimed to the Daily Mail the “smaller podcast company is struggling to get off the starting blocks,” with the slow start is said to have been influenced by Meghan’s new TV series, as her and Harry’s company Archewell announced the couple have two Netflix projects underway.
