Do you have what it takes to be in an MMA movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson?
The L.A. and Manhattan-based production company A24 is looking for talent when it shoots scenes for the movie The Smashing Machine in Vancouver, with Johnson in the title role.
Kris & Kara Casting is hosting an open casting call and no acting experience is required. However, they’re not looking for just any extras.
For the Vancouver shoot, producers are looking specifically for real-life doctors and nurses, combat fighters and people who can speak Japanese or Ukrainian fluently. Bonus points if you’re both a Ukrainian speaker and a combat fighter.

Local shooting is expected to start on May 20 and run through July under the auspices of local production company Real American Hero Productions. It’s been reported filming will also take place in Tokyo.
The Smashing Machine is based on legendary MMA fighter Mark Kerr, a multiple champion in the rough-and-tumble days of the emerging UFC empire in the late 1990s, before his struggles with depression and an opioid addiction derailed his career.
Johnson picked up the rights to Kerr’s story and has helped guide the project with writer-director Benny Safdie, who wrote and directed 2019’s Uncut Gems along with his brother Josh.
A24 has produced a long list of acclaimed films such as last year’s Iron Claw, starring Zac Efron as a member of a legendary wrestling family, and the prison drama Sing Sing.
The production company took home the 2023 best picture Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once. A24’s next release is the thriller Love Lies Bleeding starring Kristen Stewart, which opens in select Canadian theatres on March 15.
