Charlie Woods’ high school golf coach revealed he received a bit of disappointment when he chose the legendary golfer’s son to represent the team at the national championship despite having a one-point higher average. number of teammates.
Tony Harbeck gave an extensive interview to GOLF in which he explained what the young golfer is really like.
Harbeck told the publication that there is a list of 12 people at Benjamin Private School in Palm Beach Gardens.
Only five players were on the team for the state championship held in November.
There are players with a better average than Charlie at 74.3.
But what they don’t have is experience playing the El Campeon course at Mission Inn Resort in Florida, where the tournament is being held.
Harbeck explained that out of four attempts on the field, Charlie shot the extra point three times.
“So I got to thinking about that. This is a kid who’s not afraid of this golf course,” he told the publication.
“I mean, the fact you got a 72 on this golf course is saying something.
“It was tough. The fact that he had three or four rounds under par, I said, ‘You know what? I have to play him in the state finals.’”
The golf coach said the action “made my cart a little uncomfortable with some of my other guys”.
“But sometimes I have to go with my gut feeling,” he said. His decision was ultimately vindicated when the team won its fourth state championship.
Charlie’s scores of 78 and 76 helped his team lift the championship trophy.
It gave him significant bragging rights with his father because he never won a state tournament when he was growing up.
