ESPN hits back at Pat Tillman’s mom’s complaint over Prince Harry’s ESPY award

EPSN has hit back at Pat Tillman’s mom’s complaint about Prince Harry receiving the prestigious ESPY award urging the Duke of Sussexes’ Invictus Games is a “cause worth celebrating.”

This month the mother of the famous fallen war hero angrily fired off at ESPN after it was revealed that Prince Harry was going to be the recipient Pat Tillman Award for Service in Hollywood next month.

This is a coveted award that is honored to someone who has used their connection to the world of sports to positively impact others in memory of Pat Tillman, a former NFL player and US Army Ranger who was killed in action in Afghanistan.

And while ESPN has been met with fiery backlash over the controversial choice, they have continued to stand by their decision. In a statement to The Mirror, ESPN said: “ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, is honoring Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, specifically for the work of The Invictus Games Foundation as it celebrates its 10th year promoting healing through the power of sport for military service members and veterans around the world.”

They continued: “While we understand not everyone will agree with all honorees selected for any award, The Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating.”

This comes as the mother of the late soldier expressed her disapproval of Prince Harry and outrage over not being consulted over the recipient being recognized. In an interview with The Daily Mail, Mary vented: “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.”

She continued: “There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans. These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognized.”

Prince Harry was chosen for the honor for his important work leading the international multi-sport event the Invictus Games. First founded by the Duke of Sussex in 2014, the annual sports event is a multi-sport games for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both active service and veterans.
