Prince Harry ‘lost his last remaining Royal duties and is out in the cold’, claims expert
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relocation to the US was initially a temporary move, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since made their official home in Montecito, California
Prince Harry has lost his official royal duties with his residency change to the United States, a royal expert has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to the US in January 2020, as they stepped down from their roles as senior working members of the Royal Family.
Their move to Montecito, California, was only thought to be temporary, and Harry even stated in an interview shortly afterwards that the UK was his “home”, adding: “The U.K. is my home and a place that I love. That will never change. We both do everything we can to fly the flag and carry out our roles for this country with pride.”
However, a filing from his eco-travel company Travalyst showed Harry’s primary residence is in America. The London-based company, which was founded in 2020, is 75% owned by the Duke, and in recent accounts filed by the firm, it stated that Harry’s residence was: “New country/State Usually Resident: United States.” The change was made public earlier this month, but his residence was actually altered on June 29 last year, when it was announced Harry and Meghan had officially left their royal residence Frogmore Cottage.
According to royal expert and author Tom Quinn, Harry’s recent revelation regarding his main residence will have a wider impact on any future royal duties. “There are more profound implications of the change of main residence – because he is a prince of the royal blood and still fifth in line to the throne, Harry is, in theory, still a counsellor of state, charged with carrying out the official duties of the monarch should King Charles become incapacitated,” Quinn exclusively told The Mirror.

“For Harry that is now impossible. The change of residency comes on top of a statement in 2022 from the crown to Parliament that only working members of Royal family will ever be called upon to fill in for the monarch. So that leaves Harry out in the cold where he thinks he wants to be – for now. With his change of primary residence Harry is saying: ‘If Britain doesn’t want me, then I don’t want Britain,” Tom explained.
Earlier this year, it was quietly announced that Harry and his uncle Prince Andrew would not be called upon to carry out official royal duties, despite being named Counsellors of State. In a bill that became law in December 2022, it stated that only “working members of the Royal Family will be called on to act as Counsellors of State”, technically excluding Harry and Andrew who have stepped back from their royal duties. It also emerged that Princess Anne and Prince Edward were made Counsellors of State for life, and would be stepping in for King Charles if he was unable to attend public events.
