A newly discovered letter written by then-Prince Charles after Princess Diana’s death is shedding light on his unbearable emptiness.

Charles, who wrote the letter four months after the late Princess of Wales died, comforts the bereaved recipient, Peter, over the passing of a loved he refers to as ‘life-enhance’ Liz. As per reports, this letter was recently fetched for a huge amount at an auction.

An unearthed letter written by Prince Charles after the death of Diana in a car accident speaks of ‘unbearable emptiness,’ shedding new light on that grief-stricken time for the royals. The letter, penned by hand, was addressed to Charles’ friend Peter Houghton and was sold at an auction for $2000. It seems like that the now-King was writing to share sympathy at the loss of someone named Liz, also gone too soon.

He wrote, “My heart bleeds for you as I can imagine so well the utter agony and despair you must have gone through… All of us who know you have longed to wave a magic wand to transform the situation. The letter then addresses his bewilderment and confusion that comes after someone so young goes away – a similar feeling as his ex-wife, Diana, who died at the young age of 36.

According to the PEOPLE magazine, The three-page handwritten letter was written on Highgrove House letterhead and dated Dec.08, 1997, just over three months after Harry and William’s mother died. It was signed by ‘Charles’ and was covered in its original envelope, which was included in the sale.

RF/Prince Charles Wrote To His Friend, Peter
As per the Daily Express, the seller of the letter is unknown. However, the sale was handled by RR Auction out of Boston. A spokesman of the company said, “Charles was likely particularly emotional. Princess Diana had tragically passed away just a few months before, in August 1997.”

In the 2020 documentary The Queen and Prince Charles: Mother and Son, royal commentator Lady Julie Montagu said that Diana’s death changed the monarch’s role within the royal family.
