Kate Middleton rescued by Prince William after relatable fashion slip-up at huge event

It also become an almost annual tradition for the Prince and Princess of Wales to attend a St Patrick’s

Day parade alongside the 1st Battalion Irish Guards – and one year at the event, Kate suffered an awkward moment involving her shoe

As the Princess of Wales continues to recover from surgery, she will today miss an event that has pretty much become a permanent fixture in her calendar.

Usually on St Patrick’s Day, she and Prince William join the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for their annual parade on the day honouring Ireland’s patron saint – especially now Kate is the colonel of the regiment. As she is not due to return to duties until Easter following her operation, she obviously won’t be taking part this year but she has attended many times throughout the years, nearly always wearing Ireland’s national colour of green. However, in 2013 she almost ended up red-faced after suffering an awkward fashion moment during the event.

At the parade, Kate was in charge of handing out traditional shamrocks, which are passed to the soldiers. But that year, while pregnant with Prince George, she almost tumbled to the ground after getting her shoe’s heel caught in a drain cover. She tried to get her heel to budge after it became stuck but was unable to free herself without using her hands.

Luckily, husband William was on hand to help Kate steady herself without losing her shoe. She was then able to bend down to free her footwear, before carrying on with the ceremony. At last year’s St Patrick’s Day event, Kate wore a coat dress, heels and hat in a vibrant shade of teal, meaning she really stood out from the crowd.

Many royal fans had been expecting the princess in a more traditional shade of green. However, it turns out that the colour she picked for her custom made Catherine Walker jacket and stunning Jane Taylor Millinery was inspired choice. That’s because it was the same shade as the plume members of the Irish Guards wear on the right hand side of their bearskin hats.

But that’s not the only incredible attention to detail that was included in Kate’s outfit. On closer inspection the stand-up collar of the coat also echoed the stand-up collar of the Irish Guards’ tunic. Her coat also featured four buttons in a row and a space before another four buttons in a row – also exactly the same as the Irish Guards’ tunic.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Kate issued a public apology and took the blame for digitally altering photo of herself and her children released to mark Mother’s Day last week. The photograph of Kate and her children, taken by the Prince of Wales, was the first to be issued since the princess’s abdominal surgery and came amid outlandish speculation about her condition on social media.

But it was withdrawn with a “Kill” notice by international picture agencies hours later, and the UK’s PA news agency on Monday, because of suspicions it had been manipulated. Kate later said sorry with a statement on social media which read: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”

Kate was later spotted leaving Windsor in a car with William as he was driven to the Commonwealth Day service in London. The princess was not attending the service, but was understood to have a private appointment. Despite calls for the original to be published, Kensington Palace said it would not be reissuing the unedited photograph of Kate and her children.
