King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, just sent a personalized letter to a beloved war veteran.

This past week, D-Day veteran John Roberts revealed that the king, 75, and his wife, 76, sent a special card to him in honor of his 100th birthday.

The vet celebrated the special occasion with friends and family at his home in Whitstable, Kent.

Roberts posed with the card in a series of photos. The front of the note featured a portrait of His Majesty and Queen Camilla, and the inside included a special note from the king and queen.

Unfortunately, the blurry photo doesn’t reveal details of the personalized message, but it does confirm that both King Charles and Queen Camilla signed the card. The king wrote “Charles R,” while the queen penned “Camilla R. “The “R” stands for “Rex” and “Regina,” which are the Latin words for king and queen, respectively.

According to Getty Images, Roberts spent 40 years in the military before he retired in 1978. He began his service on the Royal Navy Destroyer HMS Serapis and was stationed at Sword Beach during the D-Day landings. The outlet reports, “After the war he went on to become a fighter pilot, flew a Sea Fury in Korea, captained and headed the Fleet Air Arm.”
