Prince Harry hinted at not having a green card to solidify his US citizenship through a giveaway clue, an expert claimed.
The Duke of Sussex has reportedly notified UK authorities that he is “usually resident” in the United States now.
Harry, together with his wife Meghan Markle, moved from Windsor first to Canada and then to California in 2020.
Last week signalled another major shift as Harry officially changed his primary residence over to the US. The change being timed to when they last left their UK home, Frogmore Cottage, in June 2023.
An expert noted the careful avoidance of using the phrase “permanent residence” could hint that Harry still lacks a green card.

The document is normally seen as the first step towards gaining US citizenship.
Charlotte Slocombe, a top partner at world-renowned immigration law firm Fragomen and a specialist in US immigration, said: “From a US immigration perspective ‘residency’ covers a gambit of visa categories and essentially means that he is not a tourist.
“It does not provide any indication of what type of visa he holds. The lack of the use ‘permanent residence’ seems to suggest that he does not hold a green card, which would be the first step to naturalisation and becoming a US citizen.”
She told the Daily Express: “Harry can maintain temporary US immigration status by holding an A-1 diplomatic visa, or O-1 Extraordinary Ability or Achievement visa indefinitely, without ever needing to become a permanent resident or US citizen.”
Details of the Duke’s visa status have been scarce despite the royal facing pressure from a Washington DC-based think tank for the release of the publication.

Americans react to Prince Harry signalling US is now his primary residence
Harry’s papers are currently in the hands of a federal judge who will be weighing on whether to release them following a Freedom of Information request from The Heritage Foundation.
The think tank has argued the publication of the documents is in the public interest after Harry admitted to experimenting with drugs, including cocaine and psychedelic mushrooms, in his memoir Spare.
Under current US immigration regulations, individuals who admit to using or having used drugs can be barred from entering the United States.
The Heritage Foundation said releasing Harry’s immigration documentation would show whether the royal lied to officials to secure entry to the country.
However John Bardo, a lawyer for the Biden administration, argued the Duke’s autobiography “isn’t sworn testimony or proof that the Duke of Sussex did in fact take illegal drugs.”
During the first hearing on the case last in February, Bardo said: “Saying something in a book doesn’t necessarily make it true.”
