Prince Harry could be asked to relinquish his royal titles if he became a US citizen, according to policy, which may set the stage for a case in the US Supreme Court, an expert has warned.

According to New York-based immigration lawyer Gita Gorji, if Prince Harry is pursuing US citizenship, and if successful, he may be asked to give up his royal titles, but it’s “not an open and shut case.”

Daily Express US spoke to Ms Gorji, who explained: “Some crafty lawyers could even argue this all the way to the US Supreme Court since there is nothing in the US Constitution that states this.”

She added: “If Prince Harry decided to take the long journey to become a US citizen, he could, theoretically, make the argument that the requirement he renounce his titles would actually be unconstitutional.

“That, unless he were to hold public office, the US Constitution only specifically forbids the US government from granting titles of nobility. It says nothing about titles conferred by foreign governments.”

Harry and Meghan’s children, Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2, are thought to have dual citizenship and were awarded their royal titles when King Charles took the throne.

Prince Harry’s children being American, and holding noble titles from the UK, could help Harry’s argument to pursue US citizenship and retain his royal titles, Ms Gorji said.

In February, Harry appeared on Good Morning America and mentioned the possibility of becoming a US citizen.

Press Box PR’s Lynn Carratt believes it was said in an “off the cuff” manner, but now that his visa application is under review and he’s listed the US as his permanent residence in official paperwork, it appears he could be seriously considering naturalisation.

According to Ms Gorji: “The USCIS officers that would ultimately review Prince Harry’s future green card or naturalisation applications will have to take those and many other factors into consideration.”

The immigration journey is “gruelling” says Ms Gorji, but she believes it’s worth it, becuase it’s a part of the pursuit of “opportunity” and “prosperity.”
