Queen Camilla Had the Most Hilarious Response to Meeting Prince William for the First Time

Even royals get nervous, and Queen Camilla’s first meeting with Prince William is proof.

A royal author has revealed that after Camilla first became acquainted with William, she was in urgent need of an alcoholic beverage to take the edge off.

Penny Junor, author of Queen Consort: The Life of Queen Camilla, revealed that the meeting happened because William was coming home from his boarding school in Eton, according to The Mirror. Camilla suggested she leave so that her presence wouldn’t make William uncomfortable, but then-Prince Charles called her worry “ridiculous,” and notified William that he would meet Camilla at the York House in London upon his return.

Charles and Camilla—who was already “decidedly anxious”—expected William to come back home by 7 p.m., but he instead showed up four hours early. Charles figured it would best to rip off the band-aid, and told Camilla that she and William “just get on with it.” After 30 minutes with William, Camilla boldly proclaimed, “I need a gin and tonic.”
The Mirror also reported that PR expert Mark Bolland told Junor Camilla’s relationship with William and Prince Harry needed to go public. That wasn’t an easy task either, with Bond saying it was “something awkward” initially.

“It was difficult for them; it was a natural thing. You want your mum, you don’t want her, and she had her own family,” he said. “To be fair to Camilla, she never tried to be mummy, but she was the ‘other woman’ and she was there taking daddy’s time.”

As for William and Camilla’s relationship now, the pair has forged a tight bond amid Kate Middleton and King Charles’s cancer treatments. “Recent events have obviously brought William and Camilla much closer,” royal expert Jennie Bond told OK back in March. “They have been left, almost literally, nursing the Crown while the King and the Princess recover. Their teams will be working more closely to coordinate diaries and cover the engagements that have been planned, and Camilla and William are bound to have been in much closer regular contact.”
