Why Prince Louis started nursery later than Prince George and Princess Charlotte
Prince Louis attended Willcocks Nursery School before starting at Lambrook, with William and Kate sharing a sweet snapshot to mark the occasion. But the little Prince was behind his brother and sister
The British public has celebrated many milestone moments with Prince Louis over the years – including his very first day at nursery.
To mark their little boy’s third birthday back in 2021, his proud parents shared a sweet snapshot showing him sitting on his balance bike and beaming for the camera. They explained in the caption: “Three tomorrow! Taken earlier this week by The Duchess before he left for his first day of nursery, The Duke and Duchess are pleased to share a new image of Prince Louis.”
Little Louis followed in the footsteps of his sister Princess Charlotte by attending Willcocks Nursery School in South Kensington. However, he made a later start at nursery than both his siblings for one major reason.
As a result of the Covid pandemic, William and Kate – who were in lockdown at their Sandringham home for the first few months of the year – made the decision to enrol Louis at nursery in April, as opposed to January, as was likely originally planned.
Prince George’s first day at nursery, meanwhile, took place in January 2016. William and Kate shared an adorable photo (taken by his proud mum) showing their first child all wrapped up in a navy quilted coat for the occasion.
In the picture, little Prince George (only two-and-a-half at the time) had a backpack almost twice his size on his back, and was seen standing in front of a mural outside his new pre-school.

At the time, the family lived permanently at Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate while Prince William worked for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
As such, little George was sent to the Westacre Montessori. He stayed there for 18 months before the family moved back to London, and Prince George was enrolled in reception at Thomas’ school in Battersea.
Princess Charlotte’s big first day at nursery came almost two years to the day after her brother’s. Since the family had moved to Kensington Palace, William and Kate’s only daughter was sent to nearby Willcock’s Nursery School, which charged £3,400 per term for children attending morning school, and £2,250 per term for afternoon sessions
In the picture – also taken by Kate – a then-two-year-old Charlotte wore a little red coat and a pink scarf, and beamed as she sat on some steps. She went on to join her elder brother Prince George at Thomas’s School in Battersea in September 2019, where she was known as Charlotte Cambridge.
In 2022, the family relocated to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Home Park – and in September that year, all three of the Wales children started at Lambrook School, in Berkshire, together. It was also Prince Louis’s very first day at school.
The siblings showed no obvious signs of nerves as they walked confidently into Lambrook in the sunshine holding their parents’ hands. Asked if they were excited, all three replied “yes” and Prince William said they were “all looking forward to it” and had “lots of questions”.
